CREATIVE CONNECTIONS INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AT ESCOLA SUPERIOR DE EDUCAÇÃO, VIANA DO CASTELO POLYTECHNIC
On 20th and 21st of November, 2014, the final conference of the international project Creative Connections (CC) (http://creativeconnexions.eu) was held at the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo (ESE-IPVC), associated with the 10th International Conference of the Arts, entitled International Cooperation. The CC project was coordinated internationally by Professor Mary Richardson, from the University of Roehampton, London and was funded by the Comenius Programme, with support from the European Commission (EACEA-517844). In Portugal, this project was coordinated by Professor Anabela Moura (ESE-IPVC) and involved four other European institutions of higher education, where it was coordinated by Fernando Hernandez in Spain, Dervil Jordan in Ireland, Mirja Hiltunen in Finland and Marie Fulkova in the Czech Republic. The project involved the participation of 25 schools, both primary and secondary, across Europe, in a collaborative research project. The activities took place in the premises of ESE and Dínamo (sharing space, arts and culture, where it fosters collaboration and networking and a platform for innovation, production and multidisciplinary interaction).
Lasting three years, CC began in 2011 and ends in 2014 with the main objective to explore ways to improve cultural understanding at a transnational level, between young European children. The innovative character is visible through the way the six partner countries worked to give a voice to children through Art activities related to citizenship and digital media. Creative Connections followed on the previous international project, "Images and Identity" (I&I) (http://www.image-identity.eu/), which took place between 2008 and 2011, and led by Professor Rachel Mason from the University of Roehampton, London. This project also involved the Portuguese collaboration under the coordination of Professor Anabela Moura and Degree Courses of Basic Education and Visual and Technological Education and Master's Degree in Art Education from ESE-IPVC. I&I enjoyed the collaboration of five institutions of higher education in England, Ireland, Malta, Czech Republic and Germany, and was also funded by the Comenius program and evaluated with a grade of excellent.
As had already been announced in IPVC website, (http://www.ipvc.pt) the project culminates in a series of conferences in each of the six countries. All these conferences reflect the context of the innovative work of academics and students and allows the findings to be discussed and the sharing of ideas and information, both fundamental to the pursuit of the projects goals, after completion of the research phase. ESTUDO PRELIMINAR SOBRE AS FESTAS DE NOSSA SENHORA D'AGONIA: IMPLICAÇÕES SOCIOCULTURAIS, ECONÓMICAS E AMBIENTAIS (Preliminar study of Festas de Nossa Senhora D'Agonia: social, cultural, economic and environmental implications)
The Festas de Nossa Senhora D’Agonia, one of the oldest and largest festivals held in Portugal was the subject of important research being carried out by the Escola Superior de Educação of Viana do Castelo Polytechnic with the collaboration of De Montfort University, Leicester, UK. This investigation into the festival’s artistic, cultural, economic and social impacts had several aims which included identifying how Festival d’Agonia can become more sustainable, and less dependent upon public sector funding, through identifying additional funding/income streams and partnerships that will strengthen its overall position within the cultural offer which is available at local, regional and national levels. It promoted contact with a range of existing and new stakeholders/beneficiaries and provided all parties with a deeper understanding of the benefits that result from the festival and importantly how these benefits can be developed in order to assist the festival in becoming more sustainable.
A pilot study has been developed in collaboration with Viana Festas and the Municipality of Viana do Castelo; this began in June 2014 and was completed with a short report in January 2015. This pilot study has focused on one aspect of the festival, the ethnographic procession held on Saturday 23rd August, in order to test the proposed research methodology and explore the diversity and response of the audience at this event. This research is unique within Portugal in terms of its scope, depth and breadth. It is an innovative response to the need for publically funded cultural activities to demonstrate ‘value for money’, a requirement that has increased in importance as a result of the current economic crisis and the resultant pressure on public sector budgets. It is anticipated that these insights will have demonstrable benefit to public authorities, crafts makers and the wider artistic and business communities at local, regional and national levels. One of the key topics is tourism and the extent to which the festival attracts cultural tourists and visitors from other parts of Portugal and Europe, in particular. The research examined and therefore identified how the tourism potential can be developed through stronger partnerships between the festival, local business and other cultural attractions in the municipality and the wider region.
The outcomes of this research will be of interest to other agencies too, thus dissemination of the results across Europe will be an important goal. The research suggests recommendations from the pilot study which can then be applied in 2015 and tested again in 2016. It is anticipated that the full research will be completed by 2017 and the research team have a commitment to follow the festival through to 2018. Dissemination will include presentations at selected conferences in Portugal and other European countries plus other academic outputs. All materials will also be made available on a website along with recommendations for developing further work in this emerging field of festival and event studies. The pilot project has been funded by the Local Municipality, Viana do Castelo Polytechnic and De Montfort University.

INNOVATION, ENTREPRENEURSHIP & INTERDISCIPLINAR PROJECTS
ARTE TOTAL, by Cristina Mendanha
The project - GUELRA | Choreographic Transcreation[i] Laboratory – arose in the search for strategies to promote the development of written thoughts in relationship with choreographic and co-creation work, in the artistic training of young performers. The project aims to address the connection and artistic interaction in the disciplinary nature of dancing and writing, exploring the link between space and memory, taking as a starting point the city map and its further transfer to a pre-determined artistic intervention area. Guelra is a laboratory. A laboratory of ideas where the relationship between a choreographic and co-creational work, in the artistic training of young performers, and the written thoughts are tested. The project aims to think about the connection of relationship between the artistic disciplinary nature of arts in dance and in writing, based on the assumption of Souriau[1] that the term "art are all arts" and they all – arts - have a correspondence between themselves.
Thus, this first phase of the project the focus of attention was directed to the exploration of paradoxical means: the link between space, memory, body and writing, taking as a starting point the city map and its further transfer to a pre-determined intervention area. The laboratory is part of a research in arts education, devoted to reflection on the process that follows the relationship between dance - that takes place today - and the writing of creators themselves.
[i] The name Transcreation in the title appears to explain that the project is not about translation, paraphrase, storytellers or explanation of a process of working with the body, but an attempt to think the writing and the bodies simultaneously. Thus, this note also serves as a tribute to Jorge Larrosa by his brilliant text "The Essay and Academic Writing", published in the journal Educação e Realidade, Jul / Dec 2003 28 (2): 101-115. "The issue is that the academic world is highly compartmentalized and I have a feeling that this whole transdisciplinarity, interdisciplinarity fashion and things like that style, does not any another thing than open new compartments, as if those were not enough we have. It is as if we are manufacturing specialists in relationship, in synthesis in "inter" and in "trans"; as if there is an academic policy of mestizaje; as if we were beyond the pure races making experts impurities, ie, the relationship between the pure races "(Larrosa 2003: 106).

EXHIBITIONS
"LOGS” (TOROS), by Raquel Moreira
Portugal, 2014
The exhibition opened in november 8th at 3 pm at Dínamo10, in Viana do Castelo.
In november 21th at 7 pm there was a guided tour with the participation of the Master students of Artistic and Cultural Management from E.S.E. - I.P.V.C.
"LOGS” (TOROS)
Following a work intimately related with live elements, connected with the earth – roots (exhibition “Subsoil”, 2011) and kelps (“Submerge”, 2012), tree trunk forms and textures are now explored. From the constant need of representing those elements a series of images appear, resulting from their direct print on paper through engraving. This process starts from real elements, either if they're truly alive or not. Pieces of trunks and fallen tree branches reappear, vertically, to create a new forest, reagruped and relocated.
They are logs found at Santa Luzia mountain, the landscape surrounding the whole space of the city where they are now presented.

His new publication is "The Second Coming of Jesus"
Jesus returns to earth.
After meeting activist Magdalene who is fighting for a better world, he becomes embroiled in three problematic situations.
He meets an extremist ecological group, which is plotting to destroy a maize plantation it believes to be genetically modified. Then, he observes the rise up against a tourist development that is to be built in a forest reserve. Finally, he witnesses an armed conflict between blacks and gypsies.
Along this journey, he meets a series of characters: the ecologists already mentioned, a priest who forces him to take confession, a corrupt local politician, unscrupulous contractors, a police commander forced to play Pilate, the inhabitants of run-down neighbourhood, a wizard who solves all the problems, and a black boy and a gypsy girl in love (Romy and Julian).
However, although he limits himself to accompanying Magdalene attempting only to pacify those on bad terms, even then Jesus is unable to escape the fury of mankind. And only the con man – Professor Kacimba – will recognise him.
Using irony and sarcasm, The Second Coming of Jesus to Earth broaches recent phenomena of social and political conflict.
MÓNICA OLIVEIRA's new publication is "Contemporary Art for a Critical Pedagogy"
This book starts from the assumption that a new artistic paradigm is emerging, which involves the construction of a continuously renewed knowledge, both in conceptual and relational dimensions and its consequences on art education in of initial teacher training. This project focuses on the awareness of the need to integrate art education in initial teacher education, on the horizon of contemporary issues such as: subject based identities, changes in teaching and learning, disbelief on educational justification systems, changings in art concepts and artistic practices and changes in behaviour and envisioning the future.
The study starts from a review of current literature and the opinion of arts education keys experts on the value and relevance of contemporary art in teacher education. In a second stage it includes a framework of competencies to be acquired by the students during their course and the implementation of a pedagogical project focused on contemporary art as pedagogical practices.
In this context, the study analyses theories and pedagogical practices offering new lines of action for teaching and learning based on Post Modern Curriculum and Critical Pedagogy. The study presents ways to improve initial teacher training courses by redefining students' roles as builders of their own knowledge and identity.
